Generator-themed sites

I tried lots of the links for the generators, but most of them seemed pretty boring. I don't like Simpsons or that other cartoon, so those didn't interest me. I loaded the little profile banner on my Flickr site, and sent a silly postcard to my husband with a picture of our dog as an astronaut.
Hmm... all done with those unless a more interesting one pops up.

Wikis

I really like the wiki for the st Joseph county public library. It seems to be more complete than the others. Princeton, for example seems to be limited to books. Stevens county's wiki looks like it includes a lot of topics. I think this is a great idea for libraries, continuing the age old job of guarding information and prose. Even if it is open to all to edit, I like to think that the majority of the community will be conscientious.

Library Thing

I really like this site. I don't have as many books as a lot of library people, but I will try to catalog all of them. I think my mom will really like this too, and we can play with it together. It seems like you could spend (waste) a lot of time fooling around with these sites... On the other hand it's no worse than wasting my time with TV. I didn't try anything with tags yet; gotta see how that works. And I want to write reviews for at least some of my books.

del.icio.us

THis sounds really interesting. I plan on setting up an account whether it's an exercise or not. I'm not very good at seeing the potential of something until I've explored it a lot. So, I need practice with it some more.

KCLS as a friend at MYSpace

I followed the directions to make kcls27things my friend... two weeks ago. I haven't gotten a response yet, so I clicked the link again, "add to friends."

King County Reforms for Animal Care

This beautiful Foxhound is one of the lucky ones; when his owner was done with him (maybe used for stud) Jake was dropped off at an animal shelter. But, as the shelter filled up, Jake's time ran out, so, again one of the lucky ones, he was taken into foster care through a local dog rescue group.
Many wonderful animals aren't so lucky; they're neglected, beaten, sentenced to a life as a puppy machine, constantly being impregnated and giving birth, probably while permanently restrained on a short chain (this is a puppy mill). Some dogs are trained to fight through starvation, neglect, and abuse; and some are used as bait for the fighters to practice on, then discarded when the wounds are too severe to bother treating.

Please visit King County Council Member, Julia Patterson's site to learn about her proposed legislation for reform in our county, and, if at all possible, write a letter to her that she can take to the committee to show them that their constituents want reform.
Patterson Motions for Animal Care Reforms

Here is a puppy who wasn't lucky at all; until he was rescued by a local organization. This picture was taken of Benny when he arrived at RED. He had what appears to be chemical burns or steam on 3/4 of his body. He is making great progress and bravely faces his treatments. He also has pneumonia which he is recovering from also. He wags his tail for everyone and is a joy to be a round.

Jake and Benny are both lucky now, as they wait in loving foster homes for their forever families to find them. Though, they are waiting.

Flickr finally comes through

Webshots is still too difficult for me. I can't find the options I want. But, Flickr has finally got my photos available, and everything there is working well.

Regarding Flickr

Well, after 5 weeks they finally approved my account. So, I figured NOW I can do that search of tags. My photos STILL don't show up in a search!!! I would contact them to ask what's going on, but apparently they have no interest in hearing from me unless it's to tell them, "please take my money!" I guess folks are right; Flickr Sucks big time!! I tried Webshots, but they don't have any way to change tags on photos once they are uploaded. Let me guess; I have to give them money to make changes!!! Are there any other photo sites? Any that actually do a decent job even when you arent' paying them??? It seems to me that finding my photos in a search or changing my tags are pretty basic features!!!!!

My Space, etc

I do not care for this site. It seems trashy, pushy, and kind of dirty. But, I did have fun making up a profile and pretending to be someone else. I hope we don't do much else with that site.

Social networking sites

At first I thought it was kind of silly for libraries to post to these sites. For as long as I can remember the young have been "creating" trends, and therefore culture (or something like that) and the old have been thinking the young to be silly. That makes it obvious that I am not only not one of the young anymore, but I'm going to have to stay on my toes not to turn into one of the old (I hope it's not already too late).
Most people think of patrons as being customers of the library. I would like to suggest that a patron is any citizen, and we need to be where the patrons are (within reason of course). There are patrons using these social sites quite regularly; that's where they are; we SHOULD be there for them. I don't know if I will use these sites after I've finished with 2.0, but just because it's not my scene doesn't mean the library shouldn't be there for people who dig it.

RSS Feeds

Well, this seems like it could be really useful. I've subscribed to quite a few. I'm still confused about how this will save me time. Even if I could've gotten the feed to all my favorite sites, I'd still have to check each feed. How is that better than checking the website itself? Plus, apparently if I've already checked it today I can no longer see the feed and have to go to the site anyway. I don't get it.

Mashups

After exploring all the links given for the exercise I've concluded that the trading cards are the only useful mashup so far. I thought the mosaics might be neat, but, as my Flickr account is still being reviewed my pictures don't show up on any of the searches, plus the Montager cheats; it shades the thumbnails to re-create the given photo. The spelling one just uses pictures of letters to spell words, so that was disappointing. But the trading cards make up for all of them, because I am using them for my foster dogs. This gives me small items to hand to potential adopters with a picture and a little info... Although, come to think of it, I didn't use photos from flickr, so does it really count as a mashup??

This one is from my photos on Flickr, which I thought might not be available yet as I don't think they have accepted me. But,...
Well, this is called "Bridge Web" and I got it from Mooseladder's photos. Some people had said they couldn't upload pics from Flickr, so I don't know what I did differently than they.

The best simple fudge recipe

I have made this one a lot and it's the easiest recipe I've used that's real fudge. In the photo they've added peanuts. It is a very sweet fudge. In fact, I usually substitue milk choc chips. Also, if you cover it for the first minute of cooking it will reduce the possibility of any graininess.

EASY - DO - FUDGE
Printed from COOKS.COM

3/4 c. butter (1 1/2 sticks)
3 c. sugar
2/3 c. evaporated milk
1 (12 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 1/2 c. marshmallow creme
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. nuts, chopped (optional)
Combine butter, sugar and milk in large heavy saucepan. Over low heat, bring to full boil, stirring constantly. Continue boiling for 5 minutes, stirring to avoid scorching. Remove from heat. Add remaining ingredients. Stir vigorously, making certain all particles are dissolved. Poured into greased 13 x 9 inch pan. Cool completely.

Well it took me a while to figure out how to use the blogger upload (at least coming from the web), but I got it. I had no luck yet using the flickr blogging tool, will try again later.

I found I was able to figure things out when, and only when, I READ THE DIRECTIONS. Not just the 2.0, but the help or additional instructions at the site (partly because I don't read thoroughly the first time through). You see, after I had uploaded this image I didn't see it with the other kcls pics. So, I clicked on the link by the question: "Don't see your image here?" or something like that. It explained that I needed to load 5 pics in order to get approved, which will take up to 10 days.
I also finally found the instructions to this tool. I had wanted to put my recipes with their pictures; now I can!!

One thing I found very helpful: as I followed directions and opened different things, I always opened them in new tabs or windows so I could quickly go back to previous pages for review or whatnot.

Search window

I finally found the place to search for people's blogs!! Barb and I were trying to see how to find someone else's blog; I found a search window on the blogger start page (http://www.blogger.com/start), near the bottom, directly under the create your blog arrow. YEAH!!

Learning 2.0- Blogs

The instructions have been great so far on this Learning thing. I did, however get messed up while setting up the blog; after I had finally chosen a name and URL I made the mistake of backing up to check on something and couldn't get back to the page where they accepted my URL! Finally I just logged on again and found the link to my blog ready to go, although, I hadn't chosen a template or anything.
